It’s the most fun and creative charity event of the season! A Swine Evening is a colorful gala Celebrity Piggy Bank party and auction at The Big Chill, located at 911 E. Morehead Street in Charlotte. On-line and on-site, you’ll have a chance to bid on some 90 celebrity-signed piggy banks and accompanying prizes. You could take home a Piggy Bank Package with a bank autographed by actor Will Smith, author Nicholas Sparks, Carolinas Panther Steve Smith, NASCAR legend Richard Petty or Tony Award-winning dancer Savion Glover. Twenty of the piggy banks have been decorated by homeless children who attend Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (see the About Us tab above).

The Saturday, May 15th evening event will feature live entertainment, a dance floor, food and drink, plus both live and silent auctions. An eBay auction will culminate during the event for added excitement. Reserve your tickets here, or call 704-943-9562. Your company or organization can also get involved through corporate sponsorships.

Homeless children in the Charlotte area are banking on you. Please join us. You'll have a great time for a great cause!

Our pigs are so popular, everybody wants to bid on them... and now they can! We've chosen a select group from our litter of little piggies to auction online through EBAY®. You don't have to wait to start bidding, but you will have to act fast — the online auctions are set to culminate during the event on May 15. Computer kiosks will be set up for attendees to make their last minute bids. The excitement builds to the final countdown, when winners will be announced live from the stage.

Tickets to the 3rd annual A Swine Evening will go on sale in 2010. Check back here soon to reserve yours!

You can also reserve a table for 8 for $1,250 per table and have your name (or the name of your organization) listed in the event program.

Homelessness for children isn’t just about where they lay their heads at night; it’s about where their heads are during the day at school, too. A Child’s Place works to erase the impact of homelessness on children and their education. Homelessness for children is caused by poverty. With each additional year of education, the likelihood of living in poverty as an adult diminishes. Thus, reducing the barriers to education faced by homeless children has both short-term and long-term benefits.

Founded in 1989, A Child’s Place is a collaborative effort between the Charlotte, NC community and Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools (CMS). Our services focus on the children, making sure they have the things they need to succeed in school: from clothing and shoes that fit to necessary school supplies to medical and dental care to tutors for children who are behind grade level and more. We also work with homeless parents to identify the appropriate nonprofit and government resources to resolve the issues which created their homelessness.

The families A Child’s Place works with tend to be the working poor, living a paycheck or two ahead until something happens to tilt the financial balance. 87% of them have at least one working adult when their housing crisis occurs. The average family is a single mother with 2-3 children. The average client child of A Child’s Place is 8 years old.

The need is great and growing. The number of homeless students attending CMS schools has risen to more than 2,500. A Child’s Place is the only CMS partner working specifically with homeless students. During the 2007-08 school year, A Child’s Place helped 1,366 homeless children attending 113 different Charlotte-Mecklenburg public schools.
